December - Embrace the Dark Quest Within
If you're like me in the Northern Hemisphere, the season is here for hot cocoa, cuddling in blankets, and general winter wonderland activities that are available. There are those occasions when we just don't feel like we're in the "festive" mood and this is a clue that we've got too much weighing on us. And sometimes we just want to be in our private hibernation-state for the winter and that is okay! We can't be all happy all the time; it just isn't realistic and so, what do we do during those times when we aren't feeling majestic and full of elevated exuberance?
Embrace the darkness, the quiet, and the tranquility. When we need it, we feel it and we may not know why. When I write about embracing darkness, I want to be clear. I'm not saying go all in on neglecting your wellness at all. What I am saying is allow yourself to go within on that inner vision-quest journey beginning in the heart. This is typically a time when you are acclimating to a new level of spiritual understanding, experiences, or life lessons. Just as we might be actively engaged for several months in the summer, we should allow ourselves to embrace the darker months of winter in a way that aligns us with the natural world around us.
Rest is as important as activity for healing and metabolizing all that activity whether it is social, physical, mental, emotional, or physical activities. When you embrace the inner work from a place of love and gratitude for the winter rest months, you allow another part of your soul to coalesce all the inner strength and growth for the spring and summer months ahead. Remember, each season should be welcomed with you living in alignment with them.
So, when the days grow shorter, let yourself rest more and enjoy a good book, some journaling, hot baths, candles, and good holiday cheer! If you find it difficult to connect with this idea and cannot seem to relax and let go of the hustle and bustle and you want to, try introducing a small daily ritual such as lighting a candle before bed and just enjoy the soft glow of the light while you list some things you are grateful for. Be sure to blow out your candle when you're done ;) don't want anyone falling asleep with a lit candle!
Another great ritual is perhaps in the evening after dinner, you can have a few moments of quiet time with no screens or other distractions. Get a really nice journal and pen that is special just for writing down the things that make you happy (even if they're not in your life at the moment). This could be your Favorite Things journal that you can collect ideas, jot down thoughts, and even doodle or collage in. The shutting down of screens like don't even have your phone near you or the tv on. Maybe some nice music if that is something you like and whatever you do, make connecting to this moment of joy your special time just for you that doesn't require any strenuous or stressful activity and you might just find that you look forward to it!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I hope you are having a wonderful start to your Winter Season.
